Robert Donald Clark was born in Frontier County, Neb., in 1910, and was educated at Pasadena College and the University of Southern California. Beginning in 1931, Clark taught speech at Pasadena College, the College of the Pacific, Stockton Junior College, and finally at the University of Oregon from 1943 to 1964. The history of the Honors College at University of Oregon began with the Sophomore Honors program. That program was created in 1949 to meet the academic needs of the university's most ambitious students. It was Professor Robert D. Clark who proposed a separate honors college because he believed that students "needed a community of scholars to which they could belong."
